Measuring Up — The Evolution of Impact Metrics
New metrics characterising different facets of scholarly communication are emerging at an ever increasing rate. Analysis which was once only possible by a select few groups of specialists is now considered a routine exercise, and undertaken by publishers, funding agencies, libraries, consultants, even national governments. This seminar will explore the evolution of Impact Metrics, examining strengths and weaknesses and the implications in a society increasingly focussed on measuring research quality. Sixth International Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publication
Registration is now open for the Sixth International Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publication. This congress, organized by JAMA and the BMJ Publishing Group, will feature 3 days of presentations of original research. As with the previous congresses, our aim is to improve the quality and credibility of peer review as used by journals and funders and to help advance the efficiency, effectiveness, and equitability of biomedical publication and the dissemination of scientific information throughout the world. We urge scientists, editors, publishers, funders, readers, and all who are interested in the processes by which science is funded and published to register now and join us in Vancouver in September.

Eleventh Biennial Journals Boot Camp
The AAP/PSP Journals Boot Camp is an intensive four-day course on journals publishing offered every two years (on every odd calendar year) by the Professional and Scholarly Publishing (AAP/PSP) division of the Association of American Publishers. The purpose of the boot camp is to expose participants to all aspects of journals publishing.
The boot camp is appropriate for junior to mid-level staff with an interest in broadening their knowledge of journal publishing beyond their current job function in all job categories, including acquisitions, finance, production, circulation, sales, and marketing. Though preference may be given to those who work for organizations that belong to AAP/PSP, people from any organizations with interest in journals publishing are welcome. Attendance is limited to 60 participants, as experience has shown that the best group dynamics are achieved with a maximum of six teams of ten participants each.

Plagiarism: Detection and Management
Plagiarism has long been a problem and in an increasingly digital world, it has become far easier to find and appropriate the content of others. However, the same technology also makes it easier to spot cases of plagiarism by rapidly comparing sequences of text against large databases of existing published material.
This seminar will explore the technologies available for detecting potential cases of plagiarism and their practical application to the publishing workflow. It will also cover the crucial issue of how cases are handled and what sort of action can be taken, both from the publisher's perspective and that of the university or research organisation. As well as text plagiarism, the seminar will also look at the related area of image falsification and its detection. Chair: Harvey Marcovitch, Past Chair, COPE.
