Keynote & Plenary Speakers

CSE is proud to announce Dr. Michael E. Mann as the 2018 Annual Meeting keynote speaker. Dr. Mann is Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State, with joint appointments in the Department of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI). He is also director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center (ESSC).

Mann is the author of several books including his most recent work The Tantrum that Saved the World, a children’s book that talks to kids about what’s happening to our planet, but not scare them senseless at bedtime. He has also authored The Madhouse Effect, Dire Predictions – Understanding Global Warming, and The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, which is the basis for his CSE keynote presentation.


CSE is proud to officially announce Alison Mudditt as the 2018 Annual Meeting plenary speaker. Alison joined PLOS as CEO in 2017, having previously served as Director of the University of California Press and Executive Vice President at SAGE Publications. Her 30 years in publishing also include leadership positions at Blackwell and Taylor & Francis. Alison also writes for the Scholarly Kitchen and serves on the Board of Directors of ALPSP and the Advisory Board for the Authors’ Alliance. In the past, Alison has also served as Vice Chair of the Scientific Publications Committee and a member of the Open Science Committee for the American Heart Association and on the Executive Council of PSP.

Alison’s presentation is titled “Shifting Sands: The Role of Scientific Publishers in a Post-Fact World,” and she will speak Tuesday, May 8, 8:30-9:30am.
