Important 2020 Annual Meeting Update
Dear CSE Colleagues,
I am writing to you today with news that is probably as expected as it is unwelcome. With deep regret, I must inform you that the CSE Board of Directors and the CSE Program Committee have jointly decided not to hold the 2020 Annual Meeting onsite in Portland, Oregon on its originally scheduled dates of May 2-5, 2020. We made this decision in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the myriad extenuating circumstances, not the least of which are (1) the state of emergency in Oregon, (2) the current recommendations of the CDC regarding public gatherings, and (3) institutional travel restrictions that are preventing several members and key participants from attending the meeting.
The CSE Annual Meeting is truly my favorite industry conference of the year, and I’ve been particularly excited about the robust and engaging programming this year’s Program Committee has pulled together. We remain committed to delivering excellent content to our members and are approaching these recent obstacles as an opportunity for CSE. I’m happy to share that the Program Committee and the Board are actively exploring alternative means of providing planned session content, including possible postponement and/or conversion of selected sessions to webinars or other forms of virtual presentation and participation. As of today, we do not have a firm plan in place, but be assured that we will be communicating more about this in the coming weeks.
I know many of you have already registered for this year’s meeting and are likely wondering about a refund of your registration fees in light of this decision. CSE is committed to providing a full refund to all registered attendees. I hope you can bear with us as we navigate this situation and figure out how to most efficiently process mass refunds. If you have already registered for the meeting, someone from CSE will be reaching out to you in the very near future to help convey information about your refund.
Finally, I’d like to take a moment to publicly recognize the Herculean efforts Program Committee Co-Chairs Emilie Gunn and Peter Olson—and the entire Program Committee—have put into constructing this year’s spectacular program. I am so thankful for your commitment and enthusiasm, and the many new ideas you brought to the table this year. The work you have done thus far leaves CSE in the best possible position to deliver alternative programming throughout the rest of the year, in the face of this extraordinary global crisis. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.
If you have any immediate questions or concerns that you’d like to share with the CSE leadership, please contact us at [email protected]g. In the meantime, I wish you all good health.
