New opportunities present year round. Sometimes the difficult part can be saying, “Yes, Please!” (Other times the difficulty lies in understanding punctuation choices.)
Tis the season to send and receive autoresponders. I hope you have a few days to relax as the year draws to a close. It has been a fantastically busy year for CSE including, but not limited to, Short Courses, the Annual Meeting, the Publication Certificate Program, and Webinars.
The first half of October included one of my favorite events, the Frankfurt Book Fair. Remaining thankful that the majority of scholarly publishing meetings I attend cover less geographic area and include fewer attendees (this year the count was 285,024), the fair still evokes a sense of community. For me that is partially true because the fair reassures me that humans everywhere are actually reading, which I find a very comforting notion.
I hope the first half of your September included participation in various Peer Review Week festivities. Aims included showcasing the work of editors and reviewers while simultaneously highlighting innovation. And that wasn’t the half of it, because Peer Review Week remains ambitious. As it should be!
How did I kick off August? The same way I do every year (talking about scholarly publishing). In 2018 that meant attending, and seeing some of you, at the ISMTE North American Conference in Baltimore, MD. Many thanks to Jasmine Wallace, Julie Vo, Glenn Landis, Shari Leventhal, and Alison O’Connell for manning the CSE booth! I was also pleased to speak at the meeting in a panel on professional development, which included Dana Compton, CSE President-Elect.
I hope your July is going well and has included a few moments of relaxation. Here in the Washington, DC area we’ve had sizzling temperatures and frequent reminders that conserving energy during the warmest times of the day is always appreciated.
It was fantastic to see 432 of you in New Orleans for the 2018 CSE Annual Meeting! Attending annual meetings remains my favorite way to learn about new initiatives and trends in our industry.
I hope spring is blooming wherever you are! For us on the Atlantic seaboard, it seems like winter just wants to keep hanging around. But the lengthening days and the return of the migratory birds to my backyard lets me know that Spring is here.
Happy Spring! Here on the Atlantic seaboard, we’ve faced a series of storms for the past month, so spring still seems to be a long way off.
It’s a busy time of year for CSE! We’re deep into our plans for our Annual Meeting, just a few short months away in New Orleans.
Happy New Year! I hope that your 2018 is off to a tremendous start. Rather than making resolutions for the New Year, I like to focus on goals.
Warm greetings to you all! As I write this note, I’m unwinding from the excitement of the Christmas holiday and looking towards the New Year.
Irma, Jose, Maria, Ophelia, Atlas, Nuns, Tubbs. Just a few short weeks ago, these were just words to us. Today, these names represent extreme devastation for so many people-some of them, no doubt, our friends, family, and colleagues.
Growing members’ careers is an important driver of what CSE does for you and your colleagues. Did you know that we offer a scholarship program for early career professionals?
As August turns to September, I’m thinking about all of the people who are going back to school- from the very earliest learners to graduate students.
