Dear CSE Colleagues,
It’s 6pm, and I’m about to start my 6th meeting of the day. I just rushed my dogs through their evening walk while there was still daylight left, brewed another mug of coffee to help me make it to the finish line, and then had a moment of panic that I might have forgotten to brush my teeth today. Rather than being worried about being judged for this admission, I instead think this might resonate with some of you.
That has been the gift this experience has given us. We have seen a great deal of misery, loss, uncertainty, divisiveness, and discord this year. And yet I feel a stronger-than-ever sense of solidarity with you, my colleagues and community, even though we have been unable to gather in person. Technology has enabled us to come together in new ways and keep our work moving forward surely and steadily. But it has also erased lines between professional and private personas, allowing us to see each other as real and whole people who are so much more than our jobs or volunteer roles. Each individual’s experience with this pandemic might be different, but our commonalities and shared challenges have lent us greater understanding and empathy for each other.
As scholarly publishing professionals, we have long known that science is what will bring an end to the continuing ravages of this pandemic. And, of course, the responsible and effective dissemination of that science is what we as an organization continue to champion. These recent scientific developments have brought us hope—finally—and it is my wish for all of you that hopefulness is what you take forward into the new year.
I look forward to the new year and all the events and programming we have planned in 2021. All of this is thanks to the hard work of our board of directors and committee chairs and members. I am grateful to each of them and to all our members who have remained engaged, involved, and encouraging during these difficult times. I wish you all a happy and restful holiday in whatever form that might take for you this year.
