December 2020

Dear CSE Colleagues,

Carissa Gilman, CSE President

It’s 6pm, and I’m about to start my 6th meeting of the day. I just rushed my dogs through their evening walk ‎while there was still daylight left, brewed another mug of coffee to help me make it to the finish line, and ‎then had a moment of panic that I might have forgotten to brush my teeth today. Rather than being ‎worried about being judged for this admission, I instead think this might resonate with some of you.

That has been the gift this experience has given us. We have seen a great deal of misery, loss, uncertainty, ‎divisiveness, and discord this year. And yet I feel a stronger-than-ever sense of solidarity with you, my ‎colleagues and community, even though we have been unable to gather in person. Technology has ‎enabled us to come together in new ways and keep our work moving forward surely and steadily. But it has ‎also erased lines between professional and private personas, allowing us to see each other as real and ‎whole people who are so much more than our jobs or volunteer roles. Each individual’s experience with ‎this pandemic might be different, but our commonalities and shared challenges have lent us greater ‎understanding and empathy for each other.

As scholarly publishing professionals, we have long known that science is what will bring an end to the ‎continuing ravages of this pandemic. And, of course, the responsible and effective dissemination of that ‎science is what we as an organization continue to champion. These recent scientific developments have ‎brought us hope—finally—and it is my wish for all of you that hopefulness is what you take forward into ‎the new year. ‎

On that note, this Friday the 18th, we will be hosting a special year-end edition of our virtual happy hours. ‎We will celebrate some of our accomplishments from the past year and recognize all the volunteers who ‎have made our success possible. We will also take time for some fun icebreaker games while also learning ‎how to make a couple of cocktails from an award-winning mixologist. I invite you to join us to see ‎examples of the value your membership offers and how we are going to make that value endure in 2021. ‎As a reminder, happy hours are free to all, so please invite a friend who might be interested in learning ‎more about CSE.‎

As always, news on the latest CSE comings and goings are available via our social media ‎channels (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) and our listserv.

I look forward to the new year and all the events and programming we have planned in 2021. All of this is ‎thanks to the hard work of our board of directors and committee chairs and members. I am grateful to ‎each of them and to all our members who have remained engaged, involved, and encouraging during these ‎difficult times. I wish you all a happy and restful holiday in whatever form that might take for you this year.‎
