Dear CSE Members, Colleagues, and Friends,

Have you noticed some interesting or disturbing trends in your publications, do you have insightful survey data, do you have a research question about science publishing that you can put to the test? If so, don’t miss the opportunity to prepare a poster for the 2012 CSE Annual Meeting or for future CSE meetings. And don’t forget that a research project is a requirement for the new CSE Certificate in Publication Management.

CSE members and meeting attendees are encouraged to submit abstracts describing their editorial research for presentation in the CSE 2012 Poster Session. Content must be original and individuals submitting abstracts must ensure that they will be able to attend the CSE meeting should their poster be accepted. Abstracts for posters will be reviewed by the CSE Research Committee, blinded to the identity of the presenter. Submitters will be notified whether their poster has been selected by March 1, 2012.

Please upload your abstracts online by February 1, 2012 for review. For further information, please contact Mary Warner, Research Committee chair, at mwarner@agu.org.

Scholarly publishing is an evolving field with science and technology changing rapidly. If you are a CSE member looking to broaden your knowledge and to be recognized for continuing your education, the Publication Certificate Program offers a way to take advantage of the CSE educational offerings in a formal setting.  The application fee is $75 ($50 for those who apply before the last day of the annual meeting).

Update on Science Editor

Thank you for participating in the Science Editor survey. Science Editor is now on a brief publishing hiatus while the Task Force chaired by Ken Heideman reviews the survey results and searches for new editorial leadership for Science Editor. More and more journals are discovering the need to screen papers for plagiarism prior to acceptance. Retractions are on the rise and using software to detect plagiarism is quickly becoming the norm. While sophisticated software is available to run the checks, time is required to validate results.
