January 2019

Dear CSE Colleagues,

New opportunities present year round. Sometimes the difficult part can be saying, “Yes, Please!” (Other times the difficulty lies in understanding punctuation choices.)

I’m thrilled to let you know that Carolyn deCourt has accepted the opportunity to Co-Chair the Professional Development Committee. Carolyn joins Co-Chair Jasmine Wallace as the Professional Development Committee leads programs and services that foster the career growth of CSE members. If you are ready to increase your involvement in CSE, please review the list of committees and see which appear to be the best fit for your talents or potential growth areas.

In the near future, CSE Members will cast their votes for incoming Vice President, Secretary, and Director at Large. The 2019 slate is full of incredibly talented people. Please be sure your vote is counted.

Have you already made plans to attend the 2019 CSE Annual Meeting, May 4-7 in Columbus, OH? The Program Committee, guided by Program Co-Chairs Mary Billingsley and Shari Leventhal, has been hard at work and the 2019 theme is The Spirit of Scientific Publishing: Inclusion, Identity, Technology, & Beyond. The Exhibitor & Sponsorship Prospectus went out last month and registration for the meeting is slated to open in a few weeks. Hotel reservations at an amazingly affordable rate and the link to submit posters can be found here.

The first CSE Webinar of 2019 is coming up on January 29th and covers Preprint Servers and Implications for Authors and Journals. Register today and plan to learn about the changing landscape of preprints.

As always, the latest CSE comings and goings are available via social media channels (FacebookTwitter, and LinkedIn) and our listserv (csel@lists.lists.resourcenter.net). Another constant, I value input from CSE members. If you have a question, suggestion, or a comment, please feel free to contact me.

Call for 2019 Poster Abstracts

Have you noticed some interesting or disturbing trends in your publications? Do you have insightful survey data? Or, do you have a research question about science publishing that you can put to the test? If so, don’t miss the opportunity to prepare a poster for the 2019 meeting.

Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts describing their editorial research for presentation in the CSE 2019 Poster Session. Content must be original, and individuals submitting abstracts must ensure that they will be able to attend the CSE meeting should their poster be accepted. Abstracts for posters will be reviewed by the CSE Research Committee, blinded to the identity of the submitter. Submitters will be notified by March 4 whether their poster has been accepted.

The submission deadline is February 13. Submit your abstract today!

Preprint Servers and Implications for Authors and Journals
January 29, 2019
11-12pm ET

Preprints are not new, but it is new to many fields. And now it seems to have reached a critical mass and become a real hot topic. This webinar will focus on the growing and changing landscapes of preprints:

  • What kind of preprint servers are out there?
  • What are author’s options when considering submission to a preprint server

As preprints become more and more common, new workflows emerge. Crossref now assigns DOIs to preprints and thereby make them citable. There are also different approaches among journals. Some welcome preprints, but others are more cautious and may consider it a duplicate process.
