June 2014

CSE Members, Well, it’s summertime and the living is easy, to paraphrase George Gershwin.

Projects and work responsibilities don’t ever slow down for most of us, of course, regardless of the solstice, but it is a good time to exhale and reflect back on the blur of society and industry meetings many of us attended in April and May.

It is always interesting to see the common themes between meetings and the different framing of these themes, depending on the audience. Some of the common threads this year were big data, public access to research, publication ethics, innovation, and the on-going emergence of start-ups and new initiatives.

Our own CSE meeting in San Antonio, which touched on all of these themes, was very successful this year. Attendance was strong and the quality of the program was excellent. In keeping with the season, it’s apt to say that program co-chairs Christine Casey and Kristi Overgaard hit it out of the park. Let’s give them a tip of the cap as they round the bases and head for the dugout.

African Journals Partnership Project (AJPP) Annual Meeting

Editors and supporters of the AJPP held their tenth annual meeting in San Antonio, in conjunction with the CSE meeting. The 2014 meeting theme was “Disseminating African Science Beyond the Journals.” The AJPP is a program that partners African health and medical journals with leading journals published in the United States and the United Kingdom. CSE serves as the administrative body for this project under the direction of two project directors appointed by NLM. More information on AJPP is available here.
