June 2018

Dear CSE Colleagues,

It was fantastic to see 432 of you in New Orleans for the 2018 CSE Annual Meeting! Attending annual meetings remains my favorite way to learn about new initiatives and trends in our industry. Hanging out with people who understand journals and ethics is an exceptional perk. CSE is a community that provides a welcome place to ask questions and I ask you to note that community and committee start the same way. We have 14 committees and I encourage you to join one if you haven’t already. You can also keep up with CSE through social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) and our listserv (csel@lists.resourcenter.net)

Thank you to Program Co-Chairs Helen Atkins and Jonathan Schultz, in addition to the entire program committee, for providing days full of thought-provoking sessions under our theme of Publishing in the Changing Climate of the Research Ecosystem. As a former Co-Chair, I know the work involved, and this year our Co-Chairs also implemented a new-to-CSE online system to collect and organize sessions. Well done! I’d also like to thank all 20 of our exhibitors and sponsors for the 2018 Annual Meeting. Your financial support and commitment to CSE is greatly appreciated.

We kicked off the 2018 meeting with a keynote by Michael E. Mann, PhD, who is also the author of the CSE Book Club’s next read, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines. For more information about joining the CSE Book Club, click here.

The 2019 annual meeting will be held in Columbus, OH. While I am definitely looking forward to checking out the German Village, always enjoying historic areas with excellent food, hearing The Book Loft provides 32 rooms of books and small, leashed dogs were welcomed inside raised my left brow and started me wondering if I should buy a bag in Columbus to bring home books or just take an extra bag.

Additional Items of Note:

  • Notifications were recently sent allowing attendees to collect headshots taken during the meeting.
  • We’ll be announcing the theme for the 2019 Annual Meeting in the very near future.
  • You recently received CSE’s notice regarding the European Union’s (EU) new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which took effect on May 25, 2018.

Last but definitely not least, I’d like to thank Sarah Tegen for her service to CSE. Our Past President has served as a Director on the Board, co-chaired the Program Committee for the 2015 meeting in Philadelphia, and made efficient use of her time, the Board’s time, and CSE’s resources. She also served on the Science Editor EiC Search Task Committee – look for an announcement on that front in the near future.

I value input from CSE members. If you have a question, suggestion, or a comment, please feel free to contact me.

Join the CSE Sponsorship Committee!

The 2017-2018 Sponsorship Committee had a record-breaking year for fundraising but that doesn’t mean we couldn’t use more help! If you think you have skills or network connections that could benefit CSE and our sponsorship efforts, please consider volunteering. Any commitment of time and assistance is welcome. If you are interested in getting involved in the Sponsorship Committee, please contact Jennifer Fleet or Sonja Krane.
