Spring Webinar: Mobile Optimized Web Sites
Now that nearly everyone is carrying a smart phone or tablet computer (or both!), many journals are wrestling over whether and how to optimize their sites for mobile viewing. NEW! Short Course on Publication Ethics
This year CSE will offer the first ever Short Course on Publication Ethics that will debut on Friday, April 29, preceding the CSE Annual Meeting. Although anyone can register for the one-half day course, registrants for this course who also register for one of the Short Courses held on Saturday, April 30 are eligible for a $75 discount.
This new course will address ethical issues that arise in journal publication and consider ways of preventing, investigating and resolving breeches of publication ethics. Content will be essential for editors, managing editors, and publishers. Using the CSE White Paper on Publication Ethics as a foundation, faculty will address topics such as conflicts of interest, duplicate publication, piracy and plagiarism, human subjects, data misrepresentation, image fraud, authorship disputes, editorial independence, falsification of data, and research misconduct. Participants will learn the appropriate approaches to investigate suspicions of breeches of publications ethics and uses of errata, retractions, expressions of concerns, and sanctions. Discussion will occur around case studies and include ample opportunity for participant interaction.

Science Editor now a Quarterly Publication
The first quarterly issue of Science Editor will soon arrive in your mail box!
Science Editor aims to encourage and disseminate research about peer review in science and biomedicine and to provide an international discussion forum for editors, editorial staff, publishers, scientists, and other professionals in the field of science communication. As the journal strives to reach these goals, the CSE Board decided that more substantial (but less frequent) issues were the best way forward.
CSE members will receive issues in March, June, September, and December. The editor is seeking the submission of research on peer review, editorial processes, and ethics. In addition, the publication is looking for potential peer reviewers. If you are interested in submitting a manuscript or becoming a peer reviewer, please send an e-mail query to the editor, Rebecca Benner at (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Planned for 2012: CSE Certification Program
Beginning in 2012, CSE will offer a certification program for publication managers, managing editors, and journal editors. The goal of the certification program is to increase educational opportunities that promote excellence in scientific reporting. Success in the program will require participation in various CSE short courses, annual meeting sessions, and webinars. Participants will earn a credential that can be used for seeking positions or promotions in the scientific publications field.
The program will complement, rather than compete with, the BELS program, which certifies editors who edit material published in journals, newsletters, textbooks, or reference books in scientific or related fields.
8th Edition of CSE’s Scientific Style and Format names a Project Manager
The Publications Committee is very pleased to announce that Lindsey Buscher, Managing Editor at Allen Press, has accepted the position of Project Manager for the upcoming publication of SSF8. She will lead the SSF8 subcommittee in their work developing the manuscript and will coordinate production of the book. Please join us in congratulating Lindsey!

The Council of Science Editors is in the beginning stages of preparing the new and improved edition of our beloved style manual: Scientific Style and Format, the 8th edition. The CSE Publications Committee is seeking subcommittee members to join the team and help revamp the current edition of the style manual.
