March 2017

Spring is Coming – And our Annual Meeting is Approaching…

Along with the short-lived but determined snowstorms of March and the emergence of the crocuses and tulips, spring brings hope and fresh opportunities for growth. One phenomenon occurring at this time of year is the ‘spring meeting season’ in which many societies, including my own, gather at hotels and convention centers at which their members hear the latest industry news, see the newest products, and renew friendships with others in the field. For those in editorial and publishing careers, the presentations and conversations at these meetings often offer new beginnings and ideas to meet the challenges of the year ahead and sometimes to enable monumental leaps in careers and publication products.

In keeping with these traditions, this year’s annual CSE meeting will be held in San Diego on May 20-23. As you read this letter, plans for the meeting are gathering momentum. The final sessions are being scheduled, short course speakers organized, and the meeting spaces allocated. We are looking forward to your joining us in San Diego to celebrate CSE’s 60th Anniversary. In addition to the usual meeting functions and programs, we will have some special 60th Anniversary events. It will be a fun gathering and we’re hoping to see all of you there. The meeting theme, “Setting Sail: Navigating the Future of Science Publishing,” recognizes CSE’s tradition of helping members meet the challenges encountered in their careers during times of great changes in scientific publishing.

Join us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) and our listserv ( to keep connected until we see you in San Diego!

Attendees at the meeting will be treated with a stimulating program containing a variety of sessions ranging from investigating author misconduct to editor-in-chief transitions to updating style guides; they will have the opportunity to participate in in-depth short courses on publication management, publication metrics, manuscript editing, and the short course for journal editors; and they will enjoy informal opportunities to network and hold conversations about all the latest changes in publishing scholarly journals.

Registration and hotel information can be found on the CSE website.

CSE Short Courses will be held on Saturday and Sunday (same schedule as the 2016 meeting) and the general and concurrent sessions will be held on Monday and Tuesday. The two general session speakers are Mary-Claire King, PhD, a geneticist well known for her work on breast cancer genes, and Marcia McNutt, PhD, a geophysicist, president of the National Academy of Sciences, and the former editor-in-chief of Science.
