March 2020

Dear CSE Colleagues,

Dana Compton, CSE President

I hope you are all hanging in there at home! It feels like every day brings more surreal, unwelcome news, from offices transitioning to full-time telework to states closing public schools for the rest of the academic school year. We are all missing our friends, extended family, and, yes, even our coworkers. Many of us are cooped up with kids who desperately miss their teachers and friends, and maybe don’t quite understand the enormity of the situation. And all of this while we’re trying to get our jobs done, and done well, every day. It’s a lot.

As I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, we will not be meeting in person in Portland in May. I know that many of us map out our conference schedule for the year and then choose to renew those professional memberships that provide discounts to the events we plan to attend. If this is your approach—I get it! Maybe you’ve been waiting to renew your CSE membership, and just haven’t gotten to it in the midst of EVERYTHING ELSE that’s been going on. Again, I get it!

But I hope you’ll take a few minutes to renew today. If you haven’t renewed for 2020, your membership grace period will end on March 31, 2020. Even though we can’t network in person this spring, you won’t want to miss out on what we do have in store:

  • CSE2020 Virtual: Exact dates and platform are being finalized, but our goal is still to deliver prime programming from our planned Annual Meeting Program. Ideally this will be held on our original meeting dates, so keep your calendar clear on Monday, May 4th and Tuesday, May 5th if you can. Stay tuned for confirmation and details.
  • Virtual Short Courses: I’m particularly excited about this, because virtual short course content came up as a key initiative during our strategic planning session this past fall. We are working with our faculty to offer at least one virtual short course in conjunction with CSE2020 Virtual. This is a great time to broaden or sharpen your skills or complete some certificate program requirements if you are enrolled.
  • CSE Webinars: We plan to augment our usual webinar offerings with a special series dedicated to disseminating content from the 2020 Annual Meeting program. One more way to get your CSE fix throughout the year!
  • Science Editor: Don’t lose access to valuable content! Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Schultz is introducing new columns and is working to bring you expanded content from many of the planned Annual Meeting sessions.
  • Networking: Especially during this period of social distancing, maintaining our networks in whatever ways we can—both personally and professionally—is more important than ever. Join a committee and get involved. Stay connected to your CSE colleagues through the listserv and the membership directory. Participate in the CSE mentorship program and book club. As you may have seen, we are hosting a virtual CSE Social Distancing happy hour on Friday afternoon, and I hope we’ll offer more of these social gatherings throughout the year. Stay home, but don’t be isolated!

I’ll be the first to admit this is not how I imagined spending my spring nor concluding my CSE Presidency. The abrupt shift from preparing for a long-awaited Annual Meeting is jarring, to say the least. Figuring out how we move forward from here, perhaps in untested, unconventional ways, is not easy. But together, CSE has an opportunity to shape the future of our work and our community. I hope we can count on your support!

If you have any immediate questions or concerns that you’d like to share with the CSE leadership, please contact us at [email protected]. In the meantime, I wish you all good health.
