A Time for Giving Thanks and Counting our Blessings!

It’s difficult to believe that Thanksgiving is nearly upon us. My personal plans involve joining about 85 other family members for the 68th annual Baskin family gathering in California, with members from infancy to 98 years young, in a day of thankfulness for the relationships that have endured for decades. More broadly, I would like to thank all CSE members – for supporting CSE with your membership dues and attendance at meetings, along with those who serve on the Board of Directors and committees, our meeting sponsors and exhibitors, and our outstanding staff without whom none of our activities could happen. Words cannot adequately convey my appreciation for your contributions to CSE. Take a minute to thank our CSE staff by emailing cse@councilscienceeditors.org to wish them a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am hoping you all have a happy day surrounded by loved ones that is full of thanks for family and friends and gives you time to reflect on the blessings in your lives.

Feeling included as part of a ‘family’ is one of the goals we have at CSE. This is a strong goal for me, as my early experiences at CSE did not make me feel particularly welcome. I knew virtually no one else in the organization the first few years that I attended the annual meetings. Then I realized that I could not afford to be shy if I wanted to take advantage of the networking opportunities. At the next annual CSE meeting, I decided to attend an open meeting for a committee I was interested in joining, but lo and behold, when I showed up at the door, I was told that the committee was full and I could not participate unless someone dropped out; furthermore, I was asked to provide a resume before I could be considered as a replacement for any vacancy (luckily one came up and that began my long career of serving on CSE committees). I resolved that no member should ever have an unwelcoming experience at our meetings.  We want to help our members feel included at whatever level they desire to participate in CSE activities.

Members of CSE – your professional organization – are here to network with and support each other, whether it’s for enhancing our publications work or building our careers. Please use our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) and our listserv (csel@lists.lists.resourcenter.net) to network with others and create friendships.

Board of Directors In-Person Fall Meeting

Your CSE Board of Directors met in Minneapolis, MN on October 28 and discussed numerous initiatives CSE is undertaking this year. In the coming months, you’ll hear about the mentor program that’ll be presented at the annual meeting in May, a potential new short course, the Short Course on Publication Ethics in Washington, DC on November 16, and other ‘short courses on the road’ in the offing. Collaboration with international counterpart organizations was discussed: Carissa Gilman and Mary Beth Schaeffer took CSE’s Short Course on Publication Metrics to Brazil for the ABEC (Brazilian Council of Science Editors) meeting and Patty Baskin will present two talks at the joint meeting of the Korean Council of Science Editors and the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies later this month.

Register for the Next CSE Webinar – I Demand a Recount: Investigating and Correcting Indexing Errors

The next CSE webinar is just two days away, so be sure to register! Since so much is riding on your journal’s Impact Factor, it would serve a publisher well to make sure the data calculated by Thomson Reuters is correct. This session will discuss how to audit your Impact Factor calculation as well as outline steps that a publisher can take to correct any miscalculations. Click here to learn more and to register.

Submit Nominations for the 2017 Board of Directors Election

The Board of Directors invites CSE members to submit nominations for potential candidates to serve on the CSE Board of Directors. The Nominations Committee will consider all submissions and prepare a slate of candidates based on the information that is provided and other candidate activities. In 2017, the CSE membership will elect one Vice President, one Secretary, and one Director. For more details on each position and to submit a nomination, please click here.
