October 2018

Dear CSE Colleagues,

The first half of October included one of my favorite events, the Frankfurt Book Fair. Remaining thankful that the majority of scholarly publishing meetings I attend cover less geographic area and include fewer attendees (this year the count was 285,024), the fair still evokes a sense of community. For me that is partially true because the fair reassures me that humans everywhere are actually reading, which I find a very comforting notion.

Don’t forget to join this community (we even have a Book Club!) at the 2019 Annual Meeting, May 4-7 in Columbus, OH.

Encouragement may also be found in the recent CSE Webinar “The ‘R’ Word: Removing the Stigma from Retractions.” Protecting the integrity of the scientific record is exactly the type of activity our members hold dear. As always, recordings of previous webinars are available via our website.

Have you noticed a CSE member doing the extraordinary in recent months and years? Nominations are open for the 2019 CSE Awards. Full descriptions of the CSE Award for Meritorious Achievement, Distinguished Service Award, and Certificate of Appreciation, and the nomination form, are available here. If you’ve seen someone being awesome, please say so.

The call for Board of Director Nominations is also open and looking for master communicators, determined problem solvers, passionate advocates, and change agents. We will be filling three positions this year. Position descriptions and the nomination form are available here. Yes, you can submit your own name and we encourage it.

To include your voice among those helping maintain high standards in scholarly publishing you may also join your fellow CSE members on committees. Stay tuned to the latest CSE comings and goings via social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) and our listserv (csel@lists.resourcenter.net).

Additional Items of Note:

  • Mary Beth Schaeffer, longtime CSE member, former Program Co-Chair, and currently a Director serving on the CSE Board of Directors, authored a moving piece in Annals of Internal Medicine, available here.

I value input from CSE members. If you have a question, suggestion, or a comment, please feel free to contact me.

CSE Member Login Details Updated

In an effort to better serve members, CSE has moved to a new database. While the website still looks the same and you’ll have the same capabilities, some features you’re used to will now look different. You will notice changes when you edit your profile, change your member password, register for an event or search the member directory.

To complete the process, you will need to update your CSE member login and password details, as your previous login will no longer work. To successfully update your record:

Step One: Go to the CSE website and click on the “Members Only Area” link in the top right corner of the page.
Step Two: Click the “Forgot your password?” link, as your previous CSE member login details will no longer work.
Step Three: Enter your username, which will be your email address we have on file for you, and click “Submit.” An email will be sent to your inbox. Follow the instructions to create a password.
Step Four: Once you are logged in, you may update your details and ensure your member profile is complete.

We ask that you be sure to review your profile, update your privacy settings to ensure you continue to receive communication from CSE, and peruse the new system.

If you need assistance, please contact 720-881-6046 or email CSE. We are delighted to assist you and thank you for your patience during this transitional period.

Call for Ethics Case Studies in the Editorial Office

The CSE Webinar Sub-committee is planning a future webinar on ethics and author misconduct and we need your assistance. A gap exists in author awareness on editorial policies and while the industry is doing its best to bridge this gap, the things we see in our editorial offices run the gamut from undisclosed conflict of interests to self-plagiarism to copyright permission (unintentional or not). Have you recently experienced one of these issues, or another headache-inducing ethics case with authors? We’d love to hear your story!

How were you first alerted of the problem? What were your first steps? Which tools did you use (e.g. COPE flowcharts) to aid the process? How did you communicate with your authors? What was the outcome? Please submit your case study, including the fields below, to be considered as a potential speaker for this upcoming Webinar on ethics and author misconduct to julie@ascpt.org.

Ethics Issue:
Summary: (include how you were alerted to the problem, resources utilized, steps taken, etc.)
