September 2017

Dear CSE Colleagues,

Growing members’ careers is an important driver of what CSE does for you and your colleagues. Did you know that we offer a scholarship program for early career professionals? This scholarship provides registration and reimbursement for travel expenses to attend our Annual Meeting, next year to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from May 5-8. By attending the Annual Meeting you’d have the opportunity to learn from leaders about best practices in editing and trends in the industry. Plus you’ll have the opportunity to get to know people from around the globe and understand how they approach their jobs.  We are currently seeking applicants for this award, with a submission deadline of Friday, September 28, 2017. Please apply for yourself or pass this news along to a colleague.

Past Presidents Tim Cross and Ken Heideman are spearheading our new Mentorship Committee, which pairs industry veterans (and CSE Members!) with more junior community members to help navigate career ups and downs. Tim and Ken have generously provided their time to this endeavor and provide more information below. They’d love to have you on board on either side of the equation.

And don’t forget about CSE’s education Webinar Series! CSE webinars provide educational content throughout the year and doesn’t require much to participate. Save the date for the next CSE webinar, taking place Tuesday, November 28. More details to come! You can also access all of CSE’s past webinars by purchasing the webinar recordings. The September 14th webinar, Tools of the Trade for Transparency: How Journals Can Increase Transparency in the Peer Review Process, has just been added. Be sure to purchase your recording today if you were unable to attend!

CSE Mentorship Committee

Although summer is typically a slow time of year for committee work, the Mentorship Program is heading into fall in full stride. The pilot program began with four dyads (matched pairs of mentors and mentees) that were announced while in San Diego at the kick-off meeting. This has been expanded over the summer to 13 dyads. This early success is due to a wealth of interest from potential mentees, at various stages in their careers, seeking opportunities for mentorship, matched by a wealth of willingness from veteran CSE members, some of them past presidents, who have generously offered to fulfill the role of mentors.

Mentees have a variety of needs, from learning the nuts-and-bolts, down-in-the-weeds type skills required to be successful as an editor, to other less tangible skills such as handling interpersonal workplace dynamics, working effectively with superiors and colleagues, practicing good self-advocacy, and being a good listener. The opportunity for managing editors, production editors, new editors-in-chief, and others to learn from fellow organization members with a lifetime of knowledge to share is integral to the mission and spirit of CSE.

If you are interested in participating as a mentor, mentee, or a member of the oversight committee, please contact Tim Cross or Ken Heideman, the Mentorship Committee co-chairs.
