Dear CSE Colleagues,
Happy Peer Review Week, everybody! I’ve long said I have no use for holiday “celebrations” that include neither a day off work nor a special family meal (I’m looking at YOU, Halloween). But Peer Review Week is a celebration I can get behind. With so many associated articles, events, and social media chatter, the scholcomm volume is up to 11.
I’m especially excited to be participating in CSE’s free Peer Review Week webinar this Thursday with Jennifer Regala, Karen Stanwood, and moderator Jennifer Cox. Please consider joining us! And a big thank you to Salient Content for their generous sponsorship that allows us to offer this webinar at no charge.
Following on last month’s announcement of the CSE 2020 Annual Meeting theme, Advancing Science by Exchanging Knowledge, Program Committee Co-Chairs Emilie Gunn and Peter Olson are on a roll! We are delighted to announce the keynote and plenary speakers for the upcoming meeting:
- Bryan Nosek, PhD, keynote address on Monday, May 4th.
- Maryam Zaringhalam, PhD, plenary address on Tuesday, May 5th.
Dr. Nosek and Dr. Zaringhalam are a perfect fit for this year’s theme, and I am looking forward to hearing their perspectives on open, equitable, and accessible research, among other topics that impact our day-to-day work as science communicators. If you haven’t already, please put the 2020 Annual Meeting in your calendar, May 2nd-5th in Portland, OR!
If you’re looking for a learning opportunity sooner than May and maybe a bit closer to home, registration is now open for the Publications Management Short Course on the Road in Washington, DC on November 13th. This course covers efficient and effective methods and best practices for managing a journal. If you’re a new managing editor or could use a refresher, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to learn from our experienced faculty.
As if all of these CSE events weren’t enough to fill a calendar, the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) is offering a 10% registration discount to CSE members for its ISMPP West 2019 meeting, Changing Tides and Technology in Scientific Communications, November 14th-15th, in San Diego, CA. The meeting offers educational programming for incoming, newer, and experienced professionals, with information available at www.ismpp.org/ismpp-west-meeting. To receive the 10% special discount, enter CSE10 in the “Discount Code” field when you register through October 18th.
As always, I value input from CSE members. If you have a question, suggestion, or a comment, please feel free to contact me. This is an especially important time to make your voice heard. The CSE Board of Directors will be meeting in November for a 2-day strategic planning session, during which we will identify goals and initiatives for the coming years. If you have ideas you’d like to share, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
