July 23, 2026- Alternative Metrics in Scholarly Publishing: Signals, Strategy, and Responsible Use

Time: 11:00am EDT-12:00pm EDT

Webinar Summary:

Citation-based indicators remain central to scholarly publishing, but
they no longer capture the full range of how research is discovered,
discussed, used, and shared. As alternative metrics become more
visible on journal platforms and in author communications, publishers
face growing questions about how to interpret these signals—and how to
use them responsibly. This 60-minute webinar is designed for mid- to
senior-level publishing professionals and focuses on the practical and
strategic implications of alternative metrics for journals and
societies. Speakers representing research evaluation policy,
publishing infrastructure, and researcher engagement will examine what
altmetrics actually measure, where they add value for publishers, and
where their limitations require caution. Topics will include how
altmetrics are implemented in publishing workflows, how editors and
authors interpret (and sometimes misinterpret) these indicators, and
how publishers can best align metric use with ethical principles. The
session will emphasize informed decision-making rather than advocacy,
with space for audience questions and discussion. Attendees will leave
with a clearer framework for understanding alternative metrics as
contextual signals—not proxies for quality—and guidance on how to
communicate about research impact in ways that support editorial
integrity and community trust.
