In 2025, the CSE membership will elect one Vice President, one Treasurer-Elect, and one Director to take office in 2026. Read on for additional information and submit your nominations no later than October 31, 2025!

Board of Directors Roles and Responsibilities

The CSE Board of Directors is responsible for steering the organization forward in a manner that reflects the interests of the membership. Board members provide leadership, a shared vision, a sense of mission, and are responsible for the fiscal health of CSE. 

The Nominating Committee seeks candidates who are dedicated to the future of CSE and possess the following leadership skills and attributes:

  • Master communicators who ask great questions and cultivate thought-provoking conversations that reveal the ideas that will inspire the organization's progress.
  • Determined problem solvers who see challenges not as obstacles, but as opportunities.
  • Passionate advocates with a deep-seated commitment to CSE's mission and whose enthusiasm can enliven and motivate their colleagues.
  • Change agents who provide the stability CSE needs to operate, while serving as a catalyst for transformational change.

Director

Board Directors serve as stewards of CSE’s mission to promote excellence in the communication of scientific information. 

Directors help shape policies, support strategic initiatives, and ensure that CSE operates with transparency, financial integrity, and responsiveness to its community.

President

The President ensures effective governance, strategic alignment, and organizational vitality. This role combines leadership, facilitation, and ambassadorial responsibilities, and includes full participation in the duties assigned to Members-at-Large.

Term: 1 year (followed by 1 year as Immediate Past President)

President-Elect

Collaborating closely with the President and Executive Director, the President-Elect supports organizational initiatives, helps guide board discussions, and begins shaping future priorities.

The President-Elect is also expected to chair or actively participate in committees and serve as a visible ambassador for the organization and its mission.

Term: 1 year (succeeds to President)

Vice President

This role is the first stage in CSE’s four-year presidential succession track: Vice President → President-Elect → President → Immediate Past President. The Vice President supports the President and President-Elect, and may act on their behalf when they are unavailable.

This leader helps ensure smooth governance, strategic continuity, and engaged leadership across the organization.

Secretary

The Secretary serves as the official record-keeper of the organization, coordinating the preparation, review, and distribution of board meeting minutes and maintaining CSE’s core organizational documents.

In addition to fulfilling all responsibilities of a Board Member at Large, the Secretary ensures institutional knowledge is preserved, decisions are clearly documented, and communications related to Board activity are timely and professional.

Treasurer

The Treasurer provides fiscal leadership, oversight, and guidance to ensure the financial health and integrity of CSE.

In addition to the responsibilities of a Board Member at Large, the Treasurer collaborates with the Executive Director, Finance Committee, and Board to develop budgets, monitor revenue and expenses, and ensure compliance with legal and ethical financial practices.

Treasurer-Elect

The Treasurer-Elect of the Council of Science Editors (CSE) is an elected officer of the Board of Directors who supports the current Treasurer and prepares to assume the role when the current Treasurer’s term ends. 

In addition to fulfilling all responsibilities of a Board Member at Large, the Treasurer-Elect shadows the current Treasurer, actively participates in finance-related board discussions, and becomes familiar with CSE’s financial structure, policies, and procedures.

Term: 2 years (succeeds to Treasurer)
