Despite growing recognition of the need for diversity and inclusion in scholarly publishing, significant barriers remain for researchers and editors from the Global South. These barriers include limited access to funding, challenges with English-language publication norms, and underrepresentation on editorial boards. At the same time, there is increasing international focus on equitable knowledge exchange, especially as global challenges demand input from all regions. This webinar discusses actionable steps publishers and societies can take to improve representation.

Erin Johnson

Erin Johnson is a science communications professional with over a decade of experience advancing gender equity and inclusive research ecosystems in international science. As Communications Officer at the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), a UNESCO programme unit, she leads global communications initiatives that amplify the voices and achievements of women scientists across the Global South. Her work aims to raise the visibility of women scientists and their contributions to sustainable development, as well as to address structural barriers that limit women's participation and visibility in STEM.

Sarah Phibbs

Sarah Phibbs serves as STM’s Director of Equity & Inclusion, working to foster global research equity by enabling reciprocal, diverse, and rich scholarly exchange. On behalf of the research publishing industry, Sarah works within the UN-Publisher partnership Research4Life. Previously, she was Wiley’s Vice President for society research publishing across life, health, physical and social science & humanities and ran Global Social Science & Humanities Research at Blackwell. Sarah is also a NED at Edinburgh University Press and a consultant for societies and publishers focusing on sustainable publishing, strategy, and innovation
